No Ordinary Child
At Christmas we celebrate the birth of a Child. Who was this Child? How was He different and unique? Charles Wesley wrote in the familiar Christmas song about this Offspring of the virgin's womb,"Veiled in flesh the godhead see, Hail the Incarnate deity!" This Child's birth was not natural but supernatural. As Moody said, God had contracted to the measure of a woman's womb. The Child was both man and God. He was the God-man. What does the Scripture say about Him?
Child and Son : In Isaiah 9:6, centuries before Christ was born, it was prophesied, "Unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given and the government shall be upon His shoulder and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of peace." His humanity is described as a "Child born" but His deity is expressed as the "Son given" with multiple divine titles. He was God in human flesh.
Eternal God: Not only was Christ's birth prophesied but the place of His birth was foretold in Micah 5:2, a text to which the wise men from the East paid close attention. It said about Bethlehem, "Out of thee shall come forth unto Me that is to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. " About the Christ Child to be born in Bethlehem, it was said that He had existed before and He was from eternity past. He was not only preexistent but He is self existent. He was divine.
Immanuel:Not only was Christ's birth and the place of birth predicted in the Scripture but the manner of His conception was prophesied in Isaiah 7:14, which says, "Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son and shall call His name Immanuel." The meaning of Immanuel is "God with us." (Matt. 1:23) No human being had any part in His conception but God became an embryo in a woman's womb. He was conceived supernaturally and therefore there was no taint of sin inherited by Him from the human race. He was a perfect child, a perfect God-man and therefore a perfect Savior.
Born to die :The unique blend of humanity and deity is again highlighted in Philippians 2:5-8, where we are told that the divine Lord Jesus voluntarily relinquished some of the glory of deity and took upon Himself the limitations of man. He became "obedient unto death even the death of the cross. " He was born to die so that whoever believes in Him and places his or her trust in Him, will be born again and will receive eternal life. Again Charles Wesley's words are relevant when he wrote, about the Prince of peace, "Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth."
Dear reader Christ was no ordinary Child. He was no mere human being. He was and is divine. His mission was to save you and me. Do you know about Him or do you know Him? Have you received the gift of salvation from Him and turned your life over to Him? If not, let not this Christmas pass without making this major life and death decision.
