    Hebrew: El, Elah, Elohim

    Elohim: found in Old Testament about 2500 times.

    El= strength or strong one

    Elah (Alah)= to swear, to bind oneself to an oath (faithfulness)

    The trinity is latent in Elohim, (God) present but not visible or active. A power that has not yet come into sight or into action but may at any time.

    Jehovah: "The self-exsitent one" literally "He that is who He is"

    "I AM" (Exodus 3:14).

    Hovah (Havah, Yahwe) form also means "to become", (to become known)
    "the self-existent ONE who reveals HIMSELF". Advancing the name "God" (Elohim) from strength to being.

    Jehovah is distinctly the redemption name of Deity. Redeemer "Sin- Salvation". In the scripture Salvation by Jehovah is always combined with sacrifice.

    Attributes of Jehovah

    His holiness- Leviticus 11:44,45 ; 19:1,2 ; 20:26

    Hatred & Judgment of sin- Genesis 6:6,7 Psalm 11:4-6 Deut. 32:35-42

    Love for and redemption of sinners always righteously- Genesis 8:20-21 Exodus 12:12,13 Lev. 16:2,3 Isaiah 53:5,6,10

    Jehovah (redemptive) has 7 compound names to meet every need of man.

    Jehovah-jireh: "the LORD will provide" Genesis 22:13,14

    Jehovah-rapha: "the LORD that healeth" Exodus 15:26

    Jehovah-nissi: "the LORD our banner" Exodus 17:8-15

      hates and judges sin Judges 6:1,5

      loves and saves sinners Judges 6:7,8

      but only through sacrifice Judges 6:19-21

    Jehovah-ra-ra: "the LORD my shepherd" Psalms 23

    In the Old Testament when one reads "fear of the LORD" it means reverential trust, with hatred of evil.
    Reverential- a feeling of deep respect, love, and awe Psalms 19:9
    eschew- to shun, avoid Job 1:1

    Adon, Adonai: primary meaning Master (O.T. both man & Deity) when man is referred to a small letter is used. Deity, a capital.

    Man:two relationships;master-Gen. 24:9,10,12 husband-Gen:18:12 (lord)

    Christ and believer: Master- John 13:13 husband- 2 Corinthians 11:2,3

    The Masters right to implicit obedience- John 13:13, Mt 23:10, Lk 6:46

    The servants right to direction in service- (Isaiah 6:8-11)

    Example: Exodus 4:10-12 Moses feels his weakness and incompetency, and "Moses said unto the LORD (Jehovah), O my Lord (Adonai), I am not eloquent"... Since service is in question, Moses addresses Jehovah as Lord. But now power is in question, and Jehovah (LORD) answers..."and Jehovah said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth?"... (Josh 7:8-11)

    El Shaddai: "Almighty God" Genesis 17:1

    El (God)- the "Strong One

    Shaddai-formed from "shad" (the breast) Gen 49:25 or "the breasted"- the "Nourisher", "the strength-giver", the "Satisfier" who pours Himself into believing lives.

    El Shaddai- is the strong one who is "All-sufficient"

    - also makes fruitful Genesis 17:1-8 28:3

    - further chastens His people with (for/to) fruit-bearing

    El Elyon: most high God or Most High (King)

    El (God)- the "Strong One"

    Elyon- means "Highest"

    In Genesis 14:18 Melchizedek (a Gentile) king of Salem, who was the priest of the most high God. In verse 17 the king of Sodom went out to meet Abram. In verse 22 Abram said "I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD (Jehovah), the most high God (El Elyon), the possor of heaven and earth. In verse 19 the priest blessed Abram in this manner. Thus the LORD (Jehovah) was known to the Gentiles as "most high God" El Elyon, sometimes "Most (most) High". Note Deuteronomy 32:8 nations- (Gentiles) (when separated) Other verses where Gentiles acknowledged "El Elyon": Daniel 3:26 4:17,24,25,32,34 5:18,21

    El Elyon- possessor of heaven and earth Genesis 14:19

    El (God)- the "Strong One"

    Olam- of secret or hidden things (Lev. 5:2)

    Olam- an indefinite time or age (Lev. 25:32) expresses Gods
    eternal duration (Psalm 90:2) "everlasting to everlasting"

    Combined things kept secret and indefinite duration when this name is written it speaks of wisdom of God having divided all time and to the mystery of successive ages. see Ephesians 1:9,10 3:2-6 Mt. 13:11

    Not only is He everlasting, but He is God over everlasting things.

    Jehovah Elohim: Jehovah (LORD) the "self-existent one)

    Elohim (God) is who acts (Genesis 2:4)

    Jehovah Eolhim sought the sinning ones (Genesis 3:9-13) that Elohim had made (Genesis 1:27) and clothed them (Genesis 3:21).

    Adonai: Master

    Jehovah: the "self-existent one"

    In this name we find the Adonai has more emphasis than Jehovah.

    In Genesis 15:2 Abram speaks to Jehovah as master, service.

    Jehovah: the "self-exsistant one"

    Sabaoth: host or hosts, with reference to warfare or service.

    Jehovah "power" is LORD of (warrior) hosts. Psalms 24:10 used when Israel is in need. Found mainly in Jeremiah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. In Psalms (46:7,11) we are assured "the LORD of hosts is with us."

    2 uses:

      1) Israels help. 1 Kings 18:15 Isaiah 1:9 ect.

      2) "hosts are heavenly. (Angels) All divine or heavenly power
      is available for the need of Gods people. Gen. 32:1,2
      Isaiah 6:1-5 1Kings 22:19 Luke 2:13-15

    As one begins to understand the different ways God's name is written and the relationships to humans one gains a more vivid understanding of the many ways He truly cares for His people.
