 Foods in the Bible

Introduction.

And God said, let the earth bring forth the green herb, and such as many seed and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, which may have seed in it self upon the earth, and it was so done. (Genesis1: 11).

According to the bible, the Promised Land flowered with milk and honey. But the Promised Land was even, more than that. It was a cornucopia over flowing with all kinds of healthful, healing foods.

…A land of wheat and barley, and vines, and fig trees and pomegrates: a land of oil olive and honey, a land wherein thou shall eat bread without scarceness, thou shall not lack any thing in it…. (Deut 8:8)

Nearly every book in the bible contains references to foods of the day along with rules governing their cultivation, preparation and consumption. The bible begins with the Book of Genesis (1:29) when God tells Adam …I have given you every plant yielding seed, which is upon the face of all earth and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.

And ends with flowering fruit trees in Revelations.

Bible cuisine is naturally healthful.few, if any .of today's nutritionists can find fault with it. Nearly all of the foods help maintain good health and many of them contain substances that actually combat disease. The book of Ecclesiastes in a sense authorizes and encourages the practice: The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible man will not despise them. Dozens of plants … were used medicinally in Old Testament times.

Among the foods they ate grapes, figs, pomegrates, dates, cucumbers, carrots, beans, lentils and herbs such as, dill, cumin, coriander, mint, turmeric. Cinnamon, saffron, mustard,
Biblical cooks prepared several different varieties of cheese, which is an excellent and inexpensive protein substitute for meat.

There are, in fact, hundreds of reference to plants in the Bible, But we look at few of the foods and fruits that the people of the Holy land in biblical times used to maintain good health and fight disease as well as for daily sustenance---- an that you can find at your local supermarket.

And alongside the torrent there will come up, along its bank on this side and on that side, all sorts of trees for food. And their fruitage must prove to be for food and their leafage for healing. (Ezekiel 47:12)
